nafplio by night

napflio by nightDay 19: After a long day in the car we were happy to kick up the heels in Nafplio, a harbour city with strong Venetian influences. Here we witnessed a great example of the Greek inclination for late night dining. We walked past a restaurant at about 8.30pm - it was absolutely empty, which led us to form the hypothesis that it may not in fact be open that night. However, when we passed by later at around 11pm, the same restaurant was absolutely packed to the rafters. While we’ve noticed that things start hotting up when the day starts cooling down, this even came as a surprise to us. It was a Thursday night.

We wandered around the old town quite happily and settled ourselves in a cafe in the village square where we polished off a small bottle of ouzo between us. I’ve imbibed more ouzo here in the last week than I have in my entire life. When I leave Greece, I doubt that I will be imbibing much more. I can’t explain it but it just seems the appropriate thing to do.

Ohhh, the deadly ouzo. Not-so-fond memories of that from my misspent adolescence. Try swilling a mouthful for 10 seconds, swallowing, then sucking air into your mouth.

The thing we learned about ouzo is that it is best drunk cold, quickly and then forgotten! However, in its favour, it was a good palate cleanser between mezdes. Kate has posted about this at veggie friendly.
