climbing to petra’s treasury viewpoint
Day 63: While at Petra we climbed to three of the high points with views back over the site and surrounding valleys. The first was to the High Point of Sacrifice, with views to the south; the second was to the formidable Monastery. This hike, on a less-well-trodden path, which gave us a great view overlooking the magnificent Treasury building, was a great way to finish our two days at Petra.
The walk starts just to the left of the three great tombs on the right hand side of the main path as you are walking westwards from the Treasury, down past the Ampitheatre. 5 minutes past the Palace Tomb, there is an unmarked set of stairs, which lead up to the right of another of Petra’s canyons.
Straight up the hill, past a few goats, the path climbs steadily…
… and turns a corner to give a great view overlooking the ampitheatre.
A few minutes past this, at what looks like a goatherd shelter, the paved path terminates but there is a small walking path leading to the right down the gully. A few minutes past here, now heading downhill, and the Treasury revealed itself to us again.
Thanks to Anth and Andew for the directions.
